Dear NBAS Members and Partners,

Happy New Year to all our members, sponsors and partners! In 2023, we staged several big scale events such as the Singapore Norway Innovation Conference, the Seafood Dinner, and various industry and tech focus events. It would not be possible for NBAS to be such an active business association without the excellent collaboration we have with The Norwegian Embassy and Innovation Norway. We appreciate the strong support and partnerships we have with key individuals and stakeholder organizations in Singapore and in Norway.

NBAS Cycling, launched just last year, has rapidly gained momentum with an active membership and a thriving, health-focused cycling community. If you are eager to join and participate, feel free to get in touch. Whether it's membership inquiries, sponsorship opportunities, or sharing your feedback and suggestions, reach out to us anytime at admin@nbas.org.sg. Your involvement is welcomed and appreciated.

The event calendar for 2024 is featured in the newsletter, and I look forward to meeting you one day soon. I wish you all a great dragon year ahead.

Singapore Norway Maritime Cyber Forum

Navigating the Waves of Maritime Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity, the heart-pounding cat-and-mouse game – definitely not for the faint-hearted! But here's the twist: Is it a game exclusive to IT experts? On 19 January 2024, at the Singapore Norway Maritime Cyber Forum, a spotlight shone on the unsung heroes – our seafarers. Busy at sea, the question lingers: How do we arm them with the skills to handle IT risks amidst their many responsibilities?

SNIC 23

Organized by The Royal Norwegian Embassy, Innovation Norway, and NBAS, the event sparked open discussions about the surging cyber risks in the maritime industry. Speakers acknowledged the growing complexities and costs linked to cybersecurity as the industry undergoes digitalization.

One speaker shared, “The safest ship is the one that never leaves the port!” This insight highlights a paradox—if everyone opts for maximum safety, our goods might never embark on their journey! Thus, it is essential for organizations to mitigate the risks.

In his opening address, Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance (click here to view) shared useful insights about how organizations can improve cyber resilience through three “C”s - Capabilities, Constant Vigilance, and Cooperation. This sentiment was echoed by many speakers.

Other key takeaways from the event:

  • Ecosystem Collaboration: It's beneficial to actively engage with industry stakeholders like NORMA Cyber and the Singapore Shipping Association to gain insights, updates, and advice in the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity. With the growing frequency of attacks and constant changes in cybersecurity, no organization can tackle this alone. Let's collaborate, but at the same time, ensure we are doing our own due diligence.

  • People-Centric Approach: Investing in our seafarers and providing robust training is key. Recognizing that our people play a central role in enhancing cybersecurity, especially amidst the ever-changing challenges, ensures we build a strong defense against cyber threats.
  • Business Risk Perspective: Let's broaden our perspective! Seeing cybersecurity not just as an IT risk but as a broader business risk is crucial. It's about creating awareness and taking action at the highest levels of our organization. When everyone at the helm is on board, we navigate the cyber seas with resilience.

Team Norway extends sincere thanks to Minister Chee for his impactful opening address. We also extend our appreciation to Mr. Einar Vik Arset, Director General, Norwegian Coastal Administration, and Mr. David Foo, Assistant Chief Executive, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, for their enlightening keynote speeches.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to our event sponsors as well as valued partners for their collaborative efforts.

Together, let's collaborate and work together to safeguard our seas through the three "C"s!
